Nomination and Application Procedures for 2013 UFVA Teaching Award Announced

 
As a means to recognize and reward excellence in instruction, teaching, and learning within the organization, the University Film & Video Association has instituted an annual award to acknowledge members whose achievements in pedagogy merit recognition. This award is in line with similar prizes given by the Association for films, conference papers, and other accomplishments related to our mission as an organization. One or more awards will be granted each year, with a certificate presented to the honoree(s) at the annual UFVA conference banquet.
Below are the procedures for nominations and applications for the 2013 UFVA Teaching Award:
Nomination Procedures
Candidates for the UFVA Teaching Award may be nominated by UFVA members from the same or other institutions as the nominee. However, the candidate herself/himself will be responsible for gathering and organizing the application materials.
Candidates for the Teaching Award can be nominated only by a member or members (in good standing) of the UFVA. The nominator must submit a one page nomination statement summarizing the nominee’s accomplishments in the areas of instruction, publication and development of educational materials, and/or service in film and media studies pedagogy, as outlined below. This nomination statement should be submitted online to the UFVA home office (ufvahome@gmail.com) by March 1, 2013.
The candidate will then be asked to accept or decline that nomination by March 15, 2013. In accepting the nomination, the nominee will agree to complete a dossier and submit it to three members of the UFVA Teaching Committee by May 1.
Summary of Nomination Deadlines
• March 1: Nominators must submit a nomination statement to the UFVA home office via email attachment to:ufvahome@aol.com.• March 7: The UFVA Teaching Award Committee will notify nominees that they have been nominated, asking them to accept or decline the nomination by March 15.• March 15: Nominees will accept or decline the nomination by responding to the UFVA Teaching Award Committee.• May 1: Nominees will submit three (3) bound copies or an electronic equivalent of their completed dossiers to the members of the UFVA Teaching Award Committee.• June 15: The UFVA Teaching Award Committee will render a decision about the winner(s) of the award for that year and will notify all nominees of the results.
Dossier Guidelines and Requirements
The nominee will submit three (3) copies of a bound dossier to the members of the UFVA Teaching Award Committee by May 1, 2013.
Dossier Contents
The dossier should be prepared especially for the UFVA Teaching Award. It should include the following documents, arranged in the following order:
1. Nominee’s curriculum vitae, with teaching and pedagogical activities highlighted2. Nominator’s statement3. Evidence of accomplishment in instruction: sample syllabi, exams, and assignments; student and peer evaluations; teaching awards; grants related to teaching, curricular development; representative student film/video prizes; sample student papers; other student accomplishments related to the candidate’s teaching; letters of support from students, former students, colleagues, and administrators, etc.and/or4. Evidence of publication in the area of film and media studies and/or development of educational materials: books, articles, anthology chapters, on-line publications, public lectures, conference panels and papers, educational media projects, etc.and/or5. Evidence of service/value in film and media studies: service on university and/or departmental teaching committees; service related to film/video pedagogy for the UFVA and other organizations; administrative and conference experience related to teaching; mentoring of students and colleagues; service on dissertation, thesis, or undergraduate honors committees; organization of conferences, festivals, and special events, etc.
Dossier Format
Nominee’s Curriculum Vitae—The vitae should include information on the following:
• educational background• teaching positions held• instructional section (courses taught; when and where they were taught; optional brief description of some or all courses, referencing anything innovative in the approach; list of awards, grants, or other recognition directly related to pedagogy)•publication section (books/essays/materials directly connected with film and media pedagogy)•service section (those commitments directly related to film and media pedagogy)•optional supplementary section (other significant publications, awards, grants, service and other achievements related to teaching/pedagogy and not covered in the previous sections).Nominator’s Statement—see above; one page in lengthEvidence of accomplishment in instruction—Following the guidelines under “Instruction” above, this section may include some (but not necessarily all) of the following:• syllabi• syllabi or brochures from special teaching programs and seminars• descriptions of particularly successful assignments• letters of support from professional colleagues• peer evaluations, specifying the particular institution, courses, and semesters from which data was gathered• student course evaluations, specifying the particular institution, courses, and semesters from which data was gathered• letters of support from current and former students• evidence of student scholarship or production directly resulting from the nominee’s teaching or mentorship• evidence of film/media-centered extracurricular involvement with students• evidence of advising and mentoring of student theses, dissertations, internships, screenplays, productions, and/or career development• Evidence of publication and/or development of educational materials— Following the guidelines under “Publication and Development of Educational Materials” above, this section may include some (but not necessarily) all of the following:• reference to textbooks and books on teaching should include only a copy of the cover, title page, the table of contents page, and perhaps one chapter, rather than the entire book• published essays or articles on pedagogy• reviews of books/articles/electronic or creative materials should address the pedagogical significance and/or lasting value of the work.Evidence of service—Following the guidelines under “Service/Value” above, this section may include some (but not necessarily all) of the following:• letters of support should outline and comment upon the nominee’s specific service contributions in the areas of curriculum development or educational planning; as a member or chair of various committees; as a workshop chair, participant, or panelist• samples of course or curriculum development projectsInstructionThe nominee should demonstrate evidence of achievement in some (but not necessarily all) of the following areas:• engaging student interest within the day-to-day format of the lecture or small group undergraduate or graduate classroom• designing imaginative and/or innovative assignments, lessons, lectures• encouraging and nurturing student scholarship and/or production• encouraging and influencing minority, deprived, or challenged students• mentoring students through thesis, dissertation, internship, production, or career supervision• instructing and mentoring teaching assistants in classroom methodology and practice• providing educational outreach to the local community or general public• developing programs (courses, workshops, seminars, tutorials) to improve teaching in the field at any or all levels• providing support and advice to graduates and junior faculty as they become professionalized in the classroom and the field• providing opportunities beyond the classroom for students to engage with film, television, and new media (field trips, media clubs, film and media series, etc.) and/or with scholarship in those areas (planning conferences, speakers series, etc.)• extending film and media education to the larger university and the community beyondPublication and Development of Educational MaterialsThe nominee should demonstrate evidence of achievement in some (but not necessarily all) of the following areas:• authoring or co-authoring influential textbook(s) for use in the graduate, undergraduate, or secondary film and/or media studies classroom• authoring or co-authoring influential essays on pedagogy, teaching methodology, and/or practice in the field• creating useful slides, DVDs, CD-ROMS, and other technological aids in film/media pedagogy• consulting with other universities, publishers, media companies, government bodies, or other organizations to enhance film/media education• producing quality educational films, videos, or DVDs for use in the film /media classroom• designing influential Web-based instructional resources and/or research instruments for use in film and/or media studiesService/Value in Film and Media Studies TeachingThe nominee should include evidence of contributions in some (but not necessarily all) of the following areas:• leading or participating in panels or workshops devoted to film and media pedagogy• developing curriculum in film and media studies locally or beyond• designing courses in film and media studies locally or beyond• participating in educational planning and/or policy making in the field• serving on professional policy committees devoted to film and media pedagogy
